In physics there exists the ultimate speed limit.
In a move set to send film makers and studios worldwide quivering with excitment, New Zealand producer Sheldon Whittaker has recently finished production of a short movie for the futuristic television series, Barrier, where the motto “if you’re not fast, you’re nothing” is taken to the extreme.
Set in the year 2439 Earth finds itself a member of the United Alliance of Independent Worlds where the “Barrier Racing League” (BRL) has been endorsed to promote the development of faster star ship engines.
At the heart of the BRL is a maverick racing team which finds itself under scrutiny after developing a new engine technology.
“Never before have we seen a show about a professional racing team in an outer space setting,” Whittaker said, “Its entertainment potential is literally infinite.”
Bolstering the series’ strong storylines is US actor Claudia Christian, Neighbours actor Matthew Werkmeister and New Zealand actor Bruce Hopkins.
“(Barrier) is a great setting for a television series, a great merger of human relationships set in a sci-fi realm,” Hopkins said, “I find it really exciting.”
Christian, who plays Gallea Flynn, a BRL race Master, said she found the project interesting.
“It was an interesting project and a really cool idea,” she said, “I think it will make a great TV series or movie.”
Although currently in post-production, Barrier already has a small cult following in the 14 to 60 year-old bracket through the internet site, www.barrier.tv.
“The unique thing about the internet is you can reach out and connect with huge communities of SciFi enthusiasts,” Whittaker explains, “I am really humbled by the interest people have shown.”
Whittaker plans that by utilising the talented actors and crews that reside in Australia and New Zealand, Barrier will become a source of inspiration and artistic expression for many artists and actors who reside in the Southern Hemisphere.
We intend to have the short pilot on the Barrier website early 2010.
